Optimizing videos for the web

Requirements to optimize the video are different according to the video hosting.

If you use videos hosted in Edjet LMS, the videos should be optimized for your use-case before uploading, as they are not being processed on the LMS side. Furthermore, the current implementation of the video player is not capable of streaming optimizations based on screen resolution and current internet connection speed.

General recommendation on how to optimize videos hosted on Edjet LMS:

  • Format: use web-friendly HTML5 format - MP4, WebM or Ogg
  • Codecs: see the thorough guide to the codecs supported for video and audio
  • Resolution and file size - video files should be 720p or 1080p and less that 2 GB unless you target mobile devices where 360p or 240p is an viable option too.
If you are targeting a wide range of devices including mobile devices, you will need a solution with progressive playback quality - see other options to add video content.

If you are using videos hosted on 3rd party video platform like YouTube, Vimeo, Wistia or others, the videos are being optimized and transcoded by the platform, so you don't have to worry about it. Also, the player is able to optimize the playback for various devices and current internet connection speed.

Our recommendations

As the technical and other aspects of the hosting online videos might be quire complex, we try to simplify your decision a bit.

  • If you are using the video in your course only as a supplement, you are able to produce a web-friendly videos and want to start as quickly as possible, you can host your videos on Edjet LMS and use a video lesson.
  • If you course is based on the video content and you will benefit from more video features, use a Vimeo lesson.
  • Unless you really must create a video being part of the layout side-by-side with some other content, stick to the video lessons (video lesson or Vimeo lesson) and avoid the inserting videos using editor.
